Silly Science with Simon: ULTIMATE GUIDE TO FIREWORKS IN A JAR!

Want to see some fireworks, but can't wait until New Year’s Eve or your grandma’s birthday? Then why not make your own? Simon from Silly Science shows us how; all you need is water, vegetable oil and food colouring!

You can make your own super fun and super colourful ‘fireworks’ at home, Simon from Silly Science with Simon shows us how!

Everything needed for this experiment can be found in your kitchen and is safe to use.

To try it at home, follow these steps:

  • Fill a jar with room-temperature water, until it’s three-quarters full.
  • Add some vegetable oil to a plastic cup (enough to make a 2 cm layer in the jar).
  • Add 4 drops of each colour of food colouring (red, green, blue and yellow) to the vegetable oil.
  • Stir the vegetable oil with a fork for 5 seconds, to break up the food colouring into smaller drops.
  • Pour the vegetable oil and food colouring mixture into the jar of water!

Quick tip: Make sure you do steps 4 and 5 fairly quickly. If you take too long, then the fireworks won’t work…

There’s a lot of science happening in this small jar!

There are liquids that don’t mix, liquids with different densities, and food colouring dissolving and diffusing.

Watch this experiment in action and to learn about what’s going on!
