Discover, Play, Bikeway! Free family fun on the Amy Gillett Bikeway!

The Amy Gillett Bikeway will once again come alive to celebrate and connect the Adelaide Hills with the free and fun family event, “Discover, Play, Bikeway!” on Sunday, 6 March.

Part of the Adelaide Fringe, “Discover, Play, Bikeway!” will feature the 15-kilometre trail activated with pop-up food stalls, music and roving artists all set against the backdrop of the spectacular rolling Adelaide Hills.

The free Sunday event is open to all – from seasoned cyclists to scooters and buggies – who can choose to either cycle or walk the full length or just short sections of the path, with plenty of opportunities to rest, relax and refuel along the way.

Adelaide Hills Council Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom says the event is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the fresh air of the Adelaide Hills, in a COVID safe environment whilst supporting local SA businesses, some of which are still recovering from the 2019 fires.

“The Amy Gillet Bikeway is a hidden gem for non- Adelaide Hills dwellers – so we want to encourage everyone to discover it with a day out cycling or walking along this picturesque recreation trail, taking in the views and the wonderful food, wine and entertainment on offer,” Mayor Wisdom said.

“Many residents and business owners along the Bikeway are still in recovery from bushfire and COVID-19 – so this event is a great way to raise everyone’s spirits and celebrate all that is wonderful about the Hills,” she said.

Visitors can plan their day around one or more of four main hubs along the Bikeway.

The Gillman Reserve in Oakbank is the best place to start the journey with free parking and bike, or e-bike hire from Bike About.

At the Woody Trails BMX in Woodside there will be story reading at 11:00am and 2:00pm with market stalls, food, music and entertainment plus the chance to check out the community BMX track. RAA will be offering bike repair tips and you can learn more about Amy Gillet’s life and career. Charleston Park kicks off with the local toddler ballet group at 10:30am and visitors can enjoy theatre, live music and market stalls throughout the day.

Mount Torrens Oval will be alive with Tennis SA and Mt Torrens tennis club providing hotshot tennis, a wildlife animal display, giveaways and face painting. The new Leckie nature play playground is also a must visit.

Local businesses are also on-board including Barristers Block who will be offering wine and bush ice-cream tastings on their lawn. Avalon of Woodside and Lobethal Wines also have special offers on the day.

Joining in on the festivities will be Amy Gillett’s parents, Mary and Dennis, in support and recognition of the Amy Gillett Foundation, established in their late daughter’s name.  They will be in the Adelaide Hills Council tent in Woodside from 10am-12pm and 3pm-4pm
