This event is part of our Reading Revolution read-a-thon and will take place on Monday, November 4th, from 6:15 pm in the school Hall. Why Reading Matters: Practical Insights for Families Join us for an enlightening discussion on the crucial role of reading in children’s development, focusing on practical reasons that families with children aged 0 to Year 6 can relate to. Our expert panel will explore how reading fosters brain development and neural connections in young children, enabling positive academic, social, and wellbeing outcomes.Expert panellists:

  • Representatives from Raising Literacy SA
  • Unley Library specialists
  • Local children’s authors: Andrew Joyner, Tania Ingram and Mandy Foot

Useful Tips to Consider (we’ll dive deeper into these and more during the session)

  1. Create Inviting Reading Nooks Designate a cozy corner in your home filled with books and comfortable seating. This dedicated space encourages children to spend time reading and fosters a positive reading habit.
  2. Make Reading Interactive Turn reading into an engaging activity by using voices for different characters, asking questions about the story, and encouraging your child to move or act out parts of the story. This keeps their interest and enhances comprehension.
  3. Incorporate Reading into Daily Routines Integrate reading into everyday activities, like reading recipes while cooking, instructions for games, or signs during walks. This shows children that reading is a valuable and useful skill in daily life.
  4. Use Toys and Props to Enhance Stories Bring stories to life by using toys and props related to the books you’re reading. Acting out scenes with dolls, action figures, or stuffed animals can make the story more engaging and stimulate your child’s imagination.
