Adelaide Fringe review: The Flying Bubble Show

A man gracefully suspended in the air, holding a large ball, showcasing strength and balance in a dynamic pose.
I have a confession: I stole a bubble from my kid and popped it. I couldn't resist. That's the power Maxwell the Bubbleologist has over his audience!

Forget 50 cent store-bought bubble wands. The Flying Bubble Show at the Adelaide Fringe takes bubble-blowing to a whole new level, turning them into magical, flying illusions.

From the moment the show begins, you’re transported into a world of fun and wonder. Maxwell, known as the Flying Bubble Man, teases the audience, blowing bubbles from behind a curtain before he flies onto the stage – literally. (His mate who travels around the world with him performing this show is the guy who gives Maxwell his wings!)

There are so many bubble tricks in this show, it’s hard to pick the best. The way Maxwell creates perfect giant bubbles that seem to float effortlessly in the air puts my bubble-blowing with the kids in the garden to shame. The most impressive, perhaps, is how tiny bubbles become trapped inside enormous bubbles, creating a spectacle that had the kids (and my husband!) gasping in amazement.

Maxwell’s calm stage presence makes the performance all the more captivating. Repetition is used throughout to capture the little ones’ attention and keep them engaged, with Maxwell encouraging all of us to join him in breathing in and out to make it appear as though we were blowing the bubbles ourselves!

The show bursts with energy, and the colours and shapes of the bubbles are simply stunning. It’s hard to believe such a high-energy performance with squealing kids could actually be relaxing! There’s something about a kaleidoscope of colours floating mid-air that’s so satisfying.

Tip: Sit in the front row for the best chance of bubble-popping fun, and be prepared to get wet!
