Unleash your inner author with the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge

Join the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge to craft your own stories and illustrations – a literary adventure for young authors and illustrators in the City of Charles Sturt!

Are you a young wordsmith or budding illustrator with a tale itching to be told? Look no further than the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge! This renowned community program, now in its forty-fifth year, invites all pre-school and primary school-aged children within the City of Charles Sturt council area to unleash their creativity and participate in the joy of bookmaking.

From February to May each year, this literary challenge captivates young minds, offering a platform for aspiring authors and illustrators to craft their own stories and illustrations. Whether it’s a gripping narrative, a dazzling graphic novel, an enlightening informational book, or even a poetic masterpiece, the possibilities are as endless as one’s imagination. Multilingual entries are also warmly welcomed, reflecting the vibrant diversity of the community.

What sets the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge apart is its inclusivity. Whether you’re working solo, collaborating with friends, or even teaming up with your entire class, everyone is encouraged to participate. It’s not just about the finished product; it’s about the journey of creation and the valuable skills acquired along the way.

Participants are encouraged to explore a plethora of themes and ideas, from the whimsical to the profound. Judges seek out originality, creative use of language, and meticulous attention to spelling and grammar. A well-crafted narrative structure, appealing design, and complementary illustrations are also key factors in catching the judges’ eyes. And remember, while binding style is not judged, ensure your book is sturdy enough to withstand being handled.

Entering the challenge is a breeze. Simply complete and sign the Make-A-Book Entry Form, available from February 1st to May 31st, 2024. For physical submissions, securely attach the entry form to the outside of the back cover and drop it off at any Charles Sturt Library. Alternatively, for eBooks and audio books, submissions can be made through the online form, with one form required per child.

All participants are recognised for their efforts. A $30 store voucher is awarded to the most outstanding entries. Being involved is the most important factor!

As the submission deadline approaches on May 31st, anticipation builds for the announcement of winners in August. Then, mark your calendars for September 6th, when the Mayoral Make-A-Book Ceremony will take place at the prestigious Woodville Town Hall, celebrating the creativity and accomplishments of our young authors and illustrators.

So, young wordsmiths and illustrators, let your imaginations run wild, and join the City of Charles Sturt on this literary adventure with the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge. Remember, it’s not just about the stories we tell but the magic of storytelling itself. Who knows, your masterpiece could be the next literary sensation!
