What are Brave and Able Breathing Buddies?

Parents, caregivers and the village that raise our little people need all the tools in the toolbox to manage big emotions. One of the best ‘tools’ for kids (and adults) is calm breathing. Scientific studies have shown that slow, deep breathing has the ability to reduce anxiety, increase confidence and memory, and even grow new brain cells!

This skill helps our kiddos focus in the moment on something within their body, and within their control—as opposed to ‘the thing’ (or things) that are making them sad, mad, or frustrated. It also helps them to slow down physically and acts as a ‘pause’ button for them to take a break from their thinking and emotions.

Brave and Able Breathing Buddies offer slow, deep breathing guidance without the need for an app or a smartphone. Guided light teaches kids how to calmly take control of their breathing and regain focus.

How do Brave and Able Breathing Buddies work?

Slow, controlled breathing skills are the most widely used, first prescribed coping technique in managing anxiety.

Developed in consultation with children’s psychologists and educators, Brave and Able have a built-in light that slowly grows bigger and brighter, then shrinks slowly down to
disappear. With practice, children are able to follow the light with their breath, helping them focus on their body and how it’s feeling in the moment.

Fully portable and with no need for Wi-Fi, children can practice with their Breathing Buddies wherever their adventures take them.

Behind Brave & Able

Zara McDonald is a mother of two (soon to be three) young children from South Australia, with passion to positively impact the mental health of our kids.

The idea for Brave and Able was born out of Zara’s attempts to find ways to effectively help her children through their big feelings. In conversations with other parents, she realised others were also struggling to find a way to connect to their child in these moments and that there were limited tangible tools readily available.

So, she researched; seeking input from children’s psychologists and educators on the approaches they took to help children develop coping skills.

Zara wanted to create something that would empower kids to feel safe with their feelings, and be confident to play and learn and try new things—even when it feels hard or a bit scary.

Brave and Able is focused on going beyond the Breathing Buddies to provide free, science-backed resources to help families, all made available through subscribing to the monthly email list.
