Rare Enrolment Opportunity: Mid-Year Reception 2021 at Mercedes College

Mercedes College is delighted to be part of the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools (SACCS) initiative, which is waiving Terms 3 and 4 fees for 2021 Mid-Year Reception enrolments.

With its play-based curriculum, the Mercedes College mid-year intake prepares children for a full time transition into Reception the following year through age and stage-appropriate learning.

It caters for children with birthdays from May 1 to October 31 and allows them to adapt to school at their own pace in a supportive and positive environment, attending either 3, 4 or 5 days per week.

Receptions Mercedes College

Mercedes College Principal Andrew Balkwill is a fan of the initiative.

‘The mid-year intake offers such a wonderful springboard for young students by easing them into the school environment.  Our PYP Program and inquiry-based approach to learning has been developed to help children transitioning between Kindergarten and Reception by encouraging curiosity through play-based activities.  This helps develop a strong sense of identity among all the children, as well as an essential foundation in literacy and numeracy.  It also helps them feel more confident in their new environment.  In fact, we see many of them mentoring and supporting new Reception students the following year’.

The ‘buddy’ program which links each Reception child to a Year 12 student has also been a resounding success in fostering a sense of belonging among the newer members of the College.

In addition to their ‘buddy’, children have access to the College’s impressive resources and specialist French, PE, Art and Music teachers. The learning environments, both inside the classroom and beyond, are designed to stimulate and promote a lifelong love of learning, curiosity, wellbeing, friendship and community.

‘The school community here at Mercedes is unique’, says Balkwill.  ‘When we have our Orientation Walks, our staff speak to the parents, but it’s our students who flourish on tour – after all, there is no one more qualified to talk about all that makes Mercedes special than our own students’.

Meet the Principal and join Mercedes students at one of the upcoming Orientation Walks at 9.30am on:

Wednesday 5 May 2021
Saturday 5 June 2021
Wednesday 23 June 2021
Saturday 31 July 2021

How outdoor experiences fuel child development

There’s a kind of learning that can’t be replicated inside four walls. You see it when a child pauses to pocket a rock, float leaves in a puddle, or follow the path of a butterfly. These moments aren’t diversions from learning. They’re learning at its most authentic. For children in their foundational years—from infancy to primary—outdoor learning and play isn’t just valuable; it’s essential.
