Helping your child adjust to a new school

Whether it’s due to a job relocation, a promotion, or finding a school that better meets your child's needs, changing schools can be a big adjustment for any family. While the transition brings exciting opportunities, it can also be a source of anxiety, so how can you support your child through this change?

Encourage open conversations about their feelings – are they excited, nervous, or unsure? Listening, validating, and addressing their concerns will help them feel heard and supported.

Visiting the new school before their first day can also help your child feel more comfortable. Tour the campus and meet the teachers to help make the new environment feel less overwhelming.

Look through their social media profiles and discuss their supportive community with your child. Once they have started at the school, encourage involvement in extracurricular activities to help them connect with new peers.

Lastly, patience is key as it may some take time for your child to fully adjust. With your support, they’ll soon feel more confident and settled in their ‘new normal’.

At Good Shepherd Lutheran School Para Vista, they provide a supportive and dynamic learning community, offering a nurturing environment to help students thrive during such transitions. They currently have limited places available in their Year 3 to Year 6 cohorts.
