Discover your local Catholic school this Catholic Schools Open Week

Choosing the right educational pathway for your child is a crucial decision that shapes your child’s future. From early learning to Year 12 graduation, Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) offers a comprehensive and nurturing environment for every stage of your child's educational journey.

The annual Catholic Schools Open Week is on again this August 19‐25, providing an opportunity for all families to tour their local Catholic school and see the exceptional learning environments, meet with dedicated educators, and discover the enriching opportunities that provide a strong foundation for early learning and development.

“Catholic Education South Australia is committed to providing excellence for every child and young person whose education and care are entrusted to us,” says Dr Neil McGoran, Executive Director, Catholic Education South Australia.

CESA values playgroups as the first step in a child’s educational pathway. The focus on literacy and numeracy development and engaging families in their children’s learning from birth sets a strong foundation for future academic success.

These early years services are grounded in principles that promote holistic development, ensuring that children are well-prepared for their educational journey. The programs emphasise the importance of play in cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Supported Playgroups in Catholic Education (SPiCE) are a cornerstone of CESA’s early learning offerings. The supported playgroups positively impact children’s learning and development as they are a time for both children and parents to engage in play, develop meaningful relationships and access appropriate family support services within a safe and welcoming environment.

According to Juliana Martino, Early Childhood Advisor at CESA, “Opportunities to engage in authentic playful and creative experiences nourish and support the development of children’s curiosity, persistence, and confidence. It is through play-based learning experiences that young children flourish and make meaning of their world.”

SPiCE playgroups are registered with Playgroup SA and managed by experienced facilitators who are supported by Catholic Education SA with access to professional learning and resources. This ensures each playgroup is well supported and offers developmentally appropriate learning experiences that benefit children’s overall development. All families in the community are welcome to attend their local SPiCE playgroup.

Join us during Catholic Schools Open Week from August 19-25 to discover how a Catholic education can support your child to flourish.

How outdoor experiences fuel child development

There’s a kind of learning that can’t be replicated inside four walls. You see it when a child pauses to pocket a rock, float leaves in a puddle, or follow the path of a butterfly. These moments aren’t diversions from learning. They’re learning at its most authentic. For children in their foundational years—from infancy to primary—outdoor learning and play isn’t just valuable; it’s essential.
