Thanks to this amazing partnership, visitors of all abilities can now experience the animals up close, with new features designed to make the journey through the zoo and safari park a breeze. This includes everything from wheelchair-friendly pathways to a new Variety SA on Safari bus, which is now making it possible for more guests to enjoy the adventure.
For example, the new bus can hold up to five wheelchairs or 26 passengers, making it possible for more guests to join the safari fun! Recently, students from Willunga High School got a sneak peek, riding the bus to explore the Land of Lemurs and see the lions, hyenas, and African Painted Dogs.
Other exciting updates include new glass panels at the lion viewing platform, so even those in wheelchairs can enjoy an up-close view of the roaring lions. Plus, binoculars have been installed at different heights for everyone to get a closer look at the wildlife. There’s also a brand-new, accessible drop-off point near the chimpanzee habitat, making it easier to see these cheeky primates up close.
We’ve been working alongside Zoos SA to make sure all children – no matter their background or ability – can experience the magic of the zoo.
In addition to these upgrades, Zoos SA is introducing Social Stories on their website to help visitors plan their trip and better understand what to expect. These stories, designed by Autism SA, feature pictures of popular animals like lions and giraffes and include symbols to help visitors communicate.
Zoos SA is also offering sensory-friendly experiences like ‘Relaxed Zoo’ hours and even a pilot program for Assistance Animals, making sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
“Creating an inclusive environment is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not just a goal – it’s our mission to connect people with nature and help save species from extinction,” says Elaine Bensted, CEO of Zoos SA.
Mark McGill, CEO of Variety SA, added: “For the past decade, we’ve been working alongside Zoos SA to make sure all children – no matter their background or ability – can experience the magic of the zoo.”
